How is Age Calculated?
Age is calculated by finding the difference between the date of birth and the current date (or a specified end date). The algorithm works as follows: first it calculates the number of complete years that have passed. Then it calculates the remaining months after the last birthday. Finally it calculates the remaining days after the last complete month.
For example, if you were born on March 15, 1990 and today is February 27, 2026, your age is 35 years, 11 months, and 12 days. The calculator handles edge cases like February birthdays (leap years), month-end dates, and birthdays falling on today’s date accurately.
Why Do You Need an Age Calculator?
Age calculations are needed in many everyday and professional situations:
- Government documents: Passport, Aadhaar, PAN card applications often require exact age in years and months.
- School/college admissions: Age eligibility is strictly calculated to a specific cutoff date.
- Job applications: Some government jobs in India (UPSC, SSC, banking) have age limits calculated to a specific date.
- Insurance and loans: Premium calculations are based on exact age at the time of policy purchase.
- Medical purposes: Doctors often need exact age in years and months for pediatric dosage and eligibility.
- Legal documents: Age of majority, retirement age, and pension eligibility all require precise age calculations.
- Curiosity: Simply knowing your age in days, hours, or minutes can be a fun and interesting exercise.

Leap Years — Were You Born in One?
A leap year is a year that contains an extra day — February 29 — making it 366 days instead of the usual 365. Leap years occur every 4 years to keep our calendar in alignment with Earth’s orbit around the Sun.
Leap Year Rules
- A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4 (e.g. 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008…)
- Exception: Years divisible by 100 are NOT leap years (e.g. 1900 was not a leap year)
- Exception to the exception: Years divisible by 400 ARE leap years (e.g. 2000 WAS a leap year)
People born on February 29 (leap day babies) technically only have a birthday every 4 years! In non-leap years, they usually celebrate on either February 28 or March 1 depending on their preference and country.
Recent and Upcoming Leap Years
Recent leap years include 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024. The next leap year is 2028. If you were born in any of these years, the Age Calculator will note that your birth year was a leap year.
